My approach to wedding photography on the French Riviera

Photographing a wedding on the French Riviera requires more than a good knowledge of the location. The region constantly changes its face depending on the town, the time of day, the season and even the direction of the light. A wedding in Menton doesn't have the same feel as one in Monaco. A ceremony in Èze is not the same as a reception in Cannes or a villa in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. My job is precisely to adapt to this singularity, without ever applying a fixed recipe.

What I'm looking for above all is accuracy. Accuracy in the way I capture an emotion, in the choice of moment for the couple's photos, in the way I let a landscape exist without it taking over the human story of the wedding. The French Riviera offers some incredible backdrops, but a beautiful image never rests solely on a spectacular location. What makes it strong is the balance between the light, the energy of the moment and the truth of what's happening between the people.

And in an intimate wedding, the region sometimes takes on even more power. The sea, the light, the beauty of the location and the mild climate naturally create something very emotional. You don't need a large number of guests to have a spectacular day. The French Riviera also knows how to be discreet, gentle and deeply refined.

How many photos are delivered after a wedding reportage?

The final number always depends on a number of factors: the length of the report, the rhythm of the day, the number of guests, travel, the variety of moments experienced. Every wedding has its own density. Some are very concentrated, others more extensive, more mobile, richer in interaction.

For a full-day shoot, however, I guarantee a minimum of 600 carefully selected and retouched images. I don't work with an artificial ceiling. The idea is never to count the number of photos to reach a limit, but to recreate the day in all its richness, with all that it really had to offer.

When should I book a wedding photographer on the French Riviera?

The earlier the date, the better. Saturdays between spring and autumn often go very early, especially on the Riviera, where many foreign couples plan their weddings well in advance. For these dates, booking about a year in advance is generally a very good idea.

For a weekday wedding, the schedule can be a little more flexible, but it's still preferable not to wait until the last minute. Good timing also allows you to plan the day more serenely, to talk about the venue, the lighting, the movements and the best way to approach the reportage.

Is eight hours enough for a wedding report?

Eight hours can be enough to cover a large part of the day, if the planning is well thought out. This usually covers the ceremony, couple photos, groups and families, then the cocktail party and part of the reception. This is often a very coherent format for smooth, elegant days.

When the bride and groom want to keep track of the whole evening, including the speeches, the dinner, the first dance and the start of the party, longer coverage is preferable. At around twelve hours, the report takes on a whole new dimension, telling the story of the day as it progresses, right up to its most festive energy.

Do you photograph weddings all over the French Riviera?

Yes, regularly. The richness of this region also comes from the fact that each destination has its own personality. Some couples are attracted by the spectacular panoramas of’Èze, others by the elegance of the Monaco, the light energy of Nice, the pastel charm of Menton or the prestigious atmosphere of Cannes.

I also photograph weddings in Antibes, à Villefranche-sur-Mer or to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. Each location changes the tone of the report, and that's exactly what makes the Riviera so exciting to photograph.

How do you choose between Nice, Monaco, Èze, Menton, Antibes or Cannes?

The best choice is not necessarily the most famous venue, but the one that best matches the atmosphere you imagine. Èze works beautifully for a wedding perched above the sea, very visual, almost timeless. Monaco is more suited to a glamorous, architectural celebration. Nice offers a balance between big city, sea and Mediterranean softness. Menton brings a more pastel, delicate charm. Antibes blends history, the sea and mythical Cape Town landmarks. Cannes, on the other hand, embodies a sunnier, more glamorous Riviera, more immediately iconic.

This choice depends on the style of the venue, the number of guests, the desired rhythm, but also on how you want to feel when you look at your images in a few years' time. The most important thing is that the decor is in keeping with your story, not simply with an ideal image found online.

Is a wedding on the French Riviera necessarily very formal or very luxurious?

Not at all. The region has some extremely prestigious venues, of course, but it also allows for weddings that are much more natural, relaxed and simple in spirit. The important thing is not to respond to a fixed idea of the Riviera wedding, but to find the form that really suits you.

The beauty of the French Riviera is that it can handle any kind of intensity. It can host a very grand wedding, or a more discreet, intimate, organic celebration. And in both cases, the light, the sea and the landscapes give the day a strength that is immediately felt in the images.
